Re-introduction

Re-introduction Ive been unbelievably hosed the past few days doing a combination of the following: 1. Analyzing data and writing as much as I can on the rough draft of my paper. This is my last week in the lab, and Im trying to organize everything properly so that my postdoc can do a few final experiments and write the final draft of the paper. Ive been moving numbers around in Excel so much that my hands hurt, and when I close my eyes I see pictures of neurons. 2. Starting to plan a really important party for next September/October. Details to follow later, when there are more details to give. (Oooh, cryptic.) Since I went into lab at 7 AM both yesterday and today, I am very tired and want to crawl into bed. But I thought, since its the beginning of a new application season, that Id rewrite an introduction to the blog to those of you just joining us. (I am NOT putting my full name in it like I did last time, thus enabling every internet stalker I have and apparently I have a few to effectively google me. If youre googling my full name, could you please leave a comment saying hi or something? I am tired of having to rack my brain to think of people I know in various states.) So for the basics. My name is Mollie, and I just graduated from MIT in June with degrees in brain and cognitive sciences and biology. My current research interest is protein-protein interactions in neurons, and Ill be starting a PhD program in cell biology at Harvard in September. (Like any good MIT student, I still get a little bristly when people talk about Harvard. And then I remember that I go there now. It, uh, hasnt exactly sunk in yet.) While at MIT, I participated in the UROP program for three years; I currently have authorship on an abstract, authorship on a paper thats in revision, and will have first authorship on a paper that is currently in about ten different files on my jump drive. (First authorship as an undergrad = very big deal.) I work in the lab of a pretty famous professor, who was also my academic advisor, and who wrote a ridiculously amazing letter of recommendation for my graduate school applications. I talk about my research in a bunch of different places on the blog. Its been a pretty important part of my life for the past three years, both in terms of getting me into grad school (the boring part) and in terms of making me happy to be alive and able to get out of bed in the mornings. I love research, which is why Im going to spend the rest of my life doing it; MIT is a pretty great place to be if you want to do something along those lines. I lived for four years in MacGregor, a very tall, very 70s-esque dorm on the west side of campus. Its a great place to live, and it fit my personality really well. My closest friends are the people in my entries (I lived in A for three years, then D for my senior year), and, rather critically, I met my boyfriend there. I was MacGregors rush chair in 2004, and one of my bit MIT soapboxes is that I believe very strongly in the dorm rush system I was immediately happy and at home in my dorm because I was a good fit with the residents, and I hope that all future MIT students can feel the connection and community that I experienced as a result of open dorm choice. Dormitory choice is a critical piece of MITs culture. Even though I was a band geek/choir [nasty epithet]/drama queen in high school, I came to MIT and joined the cheerleading squad. I didnt have any experience, but I got pretty good (Im stronger than I look!), and I actually became captain my junior year. I really enjoyed being on the squad for a bunch of reasons: the socialization and entertainment, the exercise (I weighed the same when I got to college as when I left), and for three two-hour chunks of time every week when I could run around and joke and not think about signaling pathways and dissociation constants. I am not a super-genius. I wasnt when I applied, I wasnt when I got here, and Im not now. I think MIT has made me into a harder worker and a better critical thinker, and frankly Ill take those traits over being a super-genius any day. You dont have to be absurdly brilliant to survive at MIT, but you do have to be willing to put in some honest labor. We subscribe to the New England work ethic around this joint. (Sidenote: One thing I do not understand, and am probably constituitively incapable of understanding, is people who choose other schools over MIT merely because they will have to work less hard elsewhere. It is beyond me that someone would choose not to challenge him/herself at such an opportunity-laden time as college. If youre going to take the easy road now, youre going to be taking the easy road for the rest of your life. Ugh.) I have a beautiful curly-haired boyfriend named Adam, and hes going to be a senior this year in aero/astro. (Yes, hes younger than I am. He lied about his age the first night he kissed me. I was lured into this under false pretenses.) Weve been together for about two and a half years now, and we just moved to an apartment on the west end of campus with an adorable bunny rabbit. Adams going to stay at MIT to get his masters, and then he will get a job and make mad loot, while I stay in grad school and make peanuts. He likes airplanes an absurd amount. He is a nationally-ranked freestyle skiier. He is also adorable. Dont believe what you hear about MIT boys. Thats about it, I think. Questions! 1. A Regular Reader asked, Incidentally, do you know of any MIT bio undergrads who applied to the grad MIT bio program? I hear this is the first year inbreeding was allowed, and was wondering if you knew what that admission percentage was? Actually, I do I mean, I applied, for one. :) Supposedly there were 9 of us who applied; I only know of four, including myself, and all four of us got in. So the admission percentage is at least 44%, and I wouldnt be surprised in the least if all nine of us got in. I only know of one person who decided to go, though most of us decided that it would be better for us to experience academic life in other places. 2. Lizzy asked, Hmmif you cant keep blogging regularly for MIT, do you have a personal blog that you can use for we readers to be updated on your graduate school goings-on? Im in a bit of a debate on this one. I do have a personal blog, but Im debating making it friends-only there have been some disquieting stories recently about grad students getting in trouble for complaining about grad school on their personal blogs, and it makes me think Id be better off tunneling underground in the blogosphere. 3. Drew asked, How do we know what foreign language class to register for? Ive been doing Spanish since middle schools, so presumably Spanish I might not be a good fit, but I dont know exactly what level to take. I heard that lots of people just take a good guess and the teacher figures out their aptitude and, if necessary moves them to a different class. Is that true? Yup, thats how it happens. And every year, some kid who took 5 years of Spanish in high school has the bright idea to take Spanish I for an easy A, and the Spanish profs figure it out in about 5 minutes, and the kid is sent off to Spanish IV or whatever. The professors are pretty good at placement. :)

Investors who are prone to confirmation biases are overly optimistic about their planned future and consequently have higher expectations from their investment performance. This optimism allows them to ignore red herrings and make obvious mistakes in spite of having prior experience. Factors affecting decision-making- Perceived Knowledge- The investor may perceive certain information as sufficient knowledge to aid decision-making. This perceived knowledge may be a lot more than what the investor actually knows. For example the investor may feel like he has insights and data points, which are not too apparent to everyone else, which support his decision to invest in a stock. Hence every nay-sayer who theorizes otherwise can be safely ignored, since the investor believes that he has more information than they do. Someone with low perceived knowledge would never have to confidence to discard another alternate opinion so easily. Trading Experience- It can be safely assumed that inexperience contributes greatly to overconfidence. Someone with years of investment experience will have learnt the hard way about misreading market signals and will have a more realistic view of their own competence in trading. Someone with relatively less experience to go by will tend to get swayed easily by popular opinion and will be more likely to make rash decisions based on perceived knowledge. Thus overconfidence will tend to reduce with age and experience. Investment amount- According to the theory of cognitive dissonance, the magnitude of dissonance increases when the stakes are high i.e. there are personal consequences to the decision being made. If an individual truly believes in a stocks position and invests a huge amount of money in it, then he stands to lose a lot if the decision proves to be a mistake. Knowing this, he will subconsciously ignore any opinions which deride his decision, thus encouraging a strong confirmation bias. Any opinion that supports his decision automatically justifies the extent of his investment. Inference- Investment performance is influenced by the frequency of trading, trading frequency and investment expectations are affected by the individuals confirmation bias, and the extent of confirmation bias is motivated by the strength of the individuals beliefs about a stock. When decision-makers process information, they tend to discount evidences that misalign with their original thought process, while emphasizing the ones that confirm it. The individuals attempt to reduce cognitive dissonance by distorting available information in favor of the alternative they previously chose to contend with. The need for investors to reduce cognitive dissonance between perceived opinions causes confirmation bias among investors while seeking information in discussion groups. They would overestimate their precision with respect to decision making and underestimate any gaps in information, and thus be prone to excessive trading and other investment mistakes.

Final Week 9 Cultural Diversity Free Essays

FINAL Cultural Diversity Week 9 Final Currently I live in a community of approximately 21,785 people according to the 2010 US Census. Herriman, which is about 20 miles southwest of Salt Lake City has grown by leaps and bounds over the last twelve years. Herriman was founded as a farming community in 1849 and was incorporated in 1999. I noticed while in researching the varying statistics for my city that I look like about 90% of the population. At 38, I am a little bit older than the average age of 27, but I am Caucasian, as are the majority of the residents. I noted with interest, during our last mayoral race, the current mayor spent the time to go out and knock on doors introducing himself to everyone. He made a significant impact on me as he stood and visited with my family and seemed to have the same values and ideals that I do. I cannot say that I have noticed a large difference in how minorities are treated by members of my community. In fact, in my local neighborhood we have a few families of varying ethnicities which have been welcomed and encouraged to teach about their homelands. It has been fascinating to watch and learn about the cultures from which they came and even to try some of the more traditional foods. The text and manuals that we have covered throughout class have covered the varying people that I am like. Caucasians have been notable throughout history and their information is fairly well published. I also noted that coming from an Irish background through several lines, the Irish were well represented. I did note a lack of other European descendants being listed through the text; I have a very strong relation to the Danish culture and did not find any information in regards to that culture in our texts at all. The local media looks much like the state, which is to say white, with a few people of color thrown in. It shouldn’t be made light of; it just feels that after everything has been so serious in discussion that lightening up the conversation cannot hurt. I have noticed as I have gotten older that we have gained a larger population of various minorities and they have begun to change the way that we see things as well as the way that we are being represented. I feel that this is a great step forward. I have noticed the biggest difference between me and most of the people in local leadership is that they are male while I am female. There is a definite lack of female leadership in our government here. Within the last ten years female leadership has increased, yet still has not changed dramatically. I have noticed that more women are running for various offices throughout the state and feel confident that this will change the local governments as well. As our minority population has grown, there have also been changes in the state government in regards to representation becoming more diverse. I feel this helps represent their interests in the community, and again feel that as people move and spread out in the local communities this will affect the local governments as well. While I do not feel that I can do a lot to change various inequities, I feel that by volunteering my time to the youth in my area I will help set them up into be more able to make changes in the future. It appears that in speaking with friends they note the same various situations that I have mentioned. Yet, because I live in a neighborhood where the majority of people are married and the wives are homemakers, I do bring a different perspective into conversations. Speaking with a local neighbor and friend, who was a former elementary school teacher, she noted that she feels that our culture is fairly self-contained due to our religious affiliations and yet she is one of the most outgoing individuals that I have met. She indicated that there is a trend to assume that people are just like you and not take the time to get to know anyone else. I have noted her on long walks through the neighborhood stopping to talk to anyone that happened to be outside and visit. Something that we both agreed on was the way that the community is very friendly and welcoming to people. It really starts with the neighborhood and then extends out into our city. A prime example of this was the â€Å"UP† house that a local builder wanted to build. He wanted to build a home that was a replica of the home in Disney’s â€Å"UP†. After contacting Disney and going through varying channels, Disney agreed to the home as long as they were allowed certain stipulations, he went looking for a community to build the home. He had contacted several cities, and Herriman agreed to allow him to build the home. The neighborhood had a HOA which agreed, despite it being colors not normally permitted, and a style different from the area, they would permit him to build and allow it into the HOA coding. However, the builder’s stipulation was that, when sold, the new homeowners had to agree to keep the colors. The home was built and each and every detail was matched to the specifications of the Disney standard, they went so far as to design the interior with the same furniture, which had to be created to replicate it. Herriman and the community welcomed this builder in during the annual â€Å"Parade of Homes† in order to make them feel more comfortable. Finally, the home was sold to a couple that wanted to move back to Utah after several years in California and the home remains the pastel coloring of the Disney design. Herriman leaders felt that having the home built in Herriman was an economic boost they were unable to turn down, and afterwards gave an honor to Bangerter Homes in recognition of such. This type of innovative government thinking is definitely in line with how any community I live in should function. I want my community leaders to always be looking at the next best source to bring economic development closer to home. Not only does this benefit the city, but it benefits me because the city has more to offer. Growing up, I lived in a more diverse area of the Salt Lake Valley and was exposed to varying cultures and ethnicities which helped me gain a firm understanding of treating people with respect, and with dealing with varying races. However, the governments there were more old fashioned and less adaptable to today’s changing environment’s. I feel as if this community was actually less welcoming than the one that I am currently in because of this. The prior community may have had a more diverse community, but welcoming new and local businesses was not something that the government chose to promote. Living in Herriman, I have noticed that many of the government officials as well as other leaders are active in getting out and being a part of the community and ensuring that we are aware as citizens of anything that might affect us; from the opening of a new restaurant, to a fire that is burning out of control. Herriman city officials have a local Facebook account and Twitter feeds that are used to help notify their citizens on a regular basis of varying volunteer activities, emergencies, CPR training classes and more. It is another way that the community in which I live is actively trying to encourage its citizens to be part of it; this reflects my views on how a community should interact. I believe that in being part of a community, you want to be involved; you want to support local business and taking advantage of times that you can volunteer to help. For instance, going out to reseed a mountain after a grass fire helps build community relations. I enjoy living where I do and feel that I have found a mostly perfect fit for my family. People take care of their yards, their homes, they are active and want to do things to improve not only themselves, but the community in which we live. All of these are ideals that coincide with how I feel a community should be. The study was conducted at St. Mary’s Academy of Caloocan City. It will focus on the positive negative effects of the social networking sites, particularly Facebook and Twitter on studies of the selected grade 8 students. Thus, it will be limited to the output that the selected respondents, every 20 students from grade 8 students coming from the sections Diligence, Justice, Patience, Prudence and Purity will provide such as data and information that will come from the questionnaires that were distributed as well as the information that will be gathered and criticized. From th e third question, we can see that the reason why students registers to Facebook and Twitter is that they want to keep in touch with friends and families. It is followed by for school purposes. Seeing the fourth question, the majority of the sophomore students said that it is addicting to use Facebook and Twitter. We asked them to rate their addiction form 1 – 10 and the most number is 8 followed by 7, 9 and 10. Also, they said that sometimes, Facebook and Twitter were useful/helpful in their studying. To the last question, they answered seldom on how does Facebook help them to overcome their mental illness. Chapter 5 Summary of Findings The study utilized the survey approach of research precisely the descriptive method. The said approach is used as much as the principal rationale of the study was to figure out the problems and/or situations under such factors that mostly affect their academic performance. Students from grade 8 of St. Mary’s Academy of Caloocan City were asked to fill up a survey questionnaire. In order to determine the factors that affect students academic performance, the qualitative research techniques were used particularly the multiple choice questions by Ebel in 1992 and scale type by Kerlington in 1992. A survey questionnaire was prepared for students. This instrument was used to determine the problems and/or situations under such factors that mostly affect students academic performance. The questionnaire consists of 10 items as indicators. 39% of the sophomore students answered that they allotted more than 3 hours per day spending for Facebook and Twitter. 82% of them answered that they spent more than 3 hours in studying per day. 80% of the respondents believed that they find Twitter and Facebook addicting for them. As we asked them to rate their addiction from 1 (lowest) to 10 (highest), we got number 8 as the highest vote. As you can see the table 2 figure, numbers 1-4 got the most answer of sometimes. It means that Facebook and Twitter has a great impact on the sophomore students. Question number 5 has 40% of students who answered. Conclusions Based on the findings, the following conclusions were drawn: 1. The majority of the student respondents spend more than 3 hours in using social networking sites. 2. Most of the student respondents spend more than 3 hours in studying. 3. The main reason of the students why they are using social networking sites is because they want to keep in touch with their friends and families. . We found out that social networking sites are very addicting. 5. Sometimes, students do experience dizziness when staying long hours using the computer 6. Only a few students choose to stay at home to open their Facebook and Twitter accounts rather than to go out with their friends. 7. Almost half of our respondents said that Facebook sometimes helps them in their studies. 8. Facebook and Twitter seldom help the students to overcome their mental illness. Recommendations On the basis of findings and conclusions taken from the study, the following recommendations are given for consideration. 1. The students should avoid spending long hours in using social networking sites and talk with their parents. 2. The parents should set their own house Internet rules and take good part on their role in their childrens school performance. 3. The teachers should maintain their good relationship with their students and guide their students in using social networking sites. 4. The school administrators should be aware of the health hazards of using social networking sites so they can well educate the students. 5. The future researchers should also use other types of survey that will make the study more comprehensive. They should also gather other information about their respondents, e. g. , gender, age, school level, and apply more questions that will make the survey more convincing and realiable.
